Overview

Project Scope and Purpose

This project was to provide repairs to three separate areas around the main airfield at the San Nicolas Island Naval Outlying Landing Field (NOLF).

Specific Work Details

The three areas needing repair under this contract were:

1. Repair of a large sinkhole at the north end of main runway. The sinkhole was undermining the airfield pavement and causing potential damage to the airfield. The repair work completed included removal, backfill and compaction of approximately 550 CY of native soils. During the backfilling, cement was mixed with the native soils to ensure long-term stability of the repair area. Work also included removal and replacement of airfield concrete pavement and concrete curbs.

2. Repair by replacement of approximately 12,000 SF of concrete pavement that was badly damaged and cracked. The pavement is in a parking apron used for loading ordnance and test missiles onto aircraft. Concrete raw materials were shipped to the island along with mixing equipment since there is no permanent batch plant on SNI. The repair included saw cutting and removal of the damaged concrete, grading, and subgrade preparation, placing forms and reinforcing steel, placing concrete, and curing blankets and then finally re-painting the striping on the pavement. During the removal process we were able to identify additional areas needing replacement and at no cost to the Government were able to incorporate these areas into our repair footprint.
