Martinez removed rubber deposits and restriped runway and taxiway markings to meet current UFC and Air Force requirements. Many of the existing airfield markings were decades old and contained hazardous heavy metals, requiring treatment as hazardous materials.
Martinez removed and repaired striping and airfield markings for the main runways, taxiways, parking aprons, and access roads. The team used high-pressure water blasting equipment to remove the existing markings and repainted the new striping in compliance with current Air Force standards. Martinez performed detailed surveying to lay out the new markings before repainting.
For rubber removal, Martinez used high-pressure water blasting and vacuum collection at runway touchdown areas. The Air Force inspected these areas, and all rubber removal passed on the first inspection.
In areas where new asphalt sealant was required, Martinez placed test sections and performed skid resistance testing in coordination with the Air Force to ensure the sealant met strict specification requirements. After successful testing, Martinez placed the sealant across the designated airfield pavement areas, with all sections passing on the first inspection.
For hazardous materials management, Martinez conducted preliminary testing of paint and soils in the work areas identified by the Air Force. The team established air monitoring around the site to prevent environmental contamination during paint removal. Martinez collected solid waste and pressure-washing water, characterized the waste, and properly disposed of all materials offsite in accordance with hazardous waste handling requirements.
Throughout the project, Martinez coordinated daily with the airfield management team to maintain airfield and runway operations while completing the work. To minimize operational impacts, Martinez transitioned to 24-hour operations over several weekends, even though this was not originally anticipated during the bid phase.
Martinez completed the project ahead of schedule, with only minimal punch list items, thanks to continuous coordination and inspections during the course of work.
