USCG Construct Addition STA Morro Bay

Overview

Project Scope and Purpose

This design/build project was for an 800 square foot addition to the Coast Guard’s Morro Bay Station. The station served as an administrative and residential facility for the Coast Guard’s crews manning support boats and rescue boats at Morro Bay.

Specific Work Details

The new addition included berthing, storage, laundry facilities, and extensive site utility improvements.

Martinez Construction served as the execution contractor for implementing all construction phase services for this contract as a subcontractor to ATC, who held the prime contract with the Coast Guard. The project was a design/build contract, with Martinez providing construction input during the design phase and directing the design team on constructability and cost issues throughout the process. The design included full permitting with the City of Morro Bay, as well as coordination with several utility providers affected by the work.

During design, our project manager and superintendent reviewed the design submittals, made recommendations for changes that improved project efficiency, and assisted in the coordination of utility and civil improvements with the government.

Once the design was completed, Martinez performed all construction services to implement the design.

Civil and utility work included the relocation of PG&E primary electrical feed for the waterfront area, relocation of sanitary sewer lines, relocation of telecommunication and cable services to the waterfront, and relocation of water service to the building. These utilities were relocated from under the building, resulting in a new utility corridor for primary utilities that served a variety of buildings and businesses along the Morro Bay waterfront.

Civil work also included new parking lot reconfiguration, temporary traffic controls, street improvements, and hardscape improvements. The entire area surrounding the new building addition was a highly trafficked tourism area, which required the civil work to be completed prior to the start of the heavy tourism season.
